Augmentin is an antibiotic from the penicillin family. It functions by eliminating bacteria that are sensitive to it.
Amoxicillin is a semi-synthetic antibiotic that has a wide range of bactericidal effects against numerous gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. However, it can be broken down by β-lactamases, which means it does not work against organisms that produce these enzymes. Clavulanic acid is a β-lactam, related to penicillins, that can deactivate a variety of β-lactamase enzymes often found in microorganisms that are resistant to penicillins and cephalosporins. It is particularly effective against significant plasmid-mediated β-lactamases that often lead to drug resistance.
Amoxicillin and Clavulanate Potassium are prescribed for various bacterial infections, including sinusitis, pneumonia, ear infections, bronchitis, urinary tract infections, and skin infections.
If you have experienced an allergic reaction to penicillin or cephalosporins, you might also be allergic to amoxicillin and clavulanate potassium.
Before starting Amoxicillin and Clavulanate Potassium, inform your doctor if you have liver disease (or a past occurrence of hepatitis or jaundice), kidney disease, or mononucleosis.
Potential serious allergic reactions include: hives; trouble breathing; swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat. Less severe side effects may include mild diarrhea, gas, stomach discomfort; nausea or vomiting; headaches; skin rashes or itching; white patches in the mouth or throat; or vaginal yeast infections (itching or discharge).
Anticoagulants may heighten the risk of bleeding; Probenecid could boost the levels of Augmentin in your bloodstream; the effectiveness of Augmentin might be reduced by chloramphenicol, macrolide antibiotics, sulfonamides, or tetracycline antibiotics; Augmentin may increase the side effects of Methotrexate; and it may decrease the effectiveness of the live oral typhoid vaccine or hormonal birth control (e.g., birth control pills).
